Unfaithful
Dan's Comments
I've read professional reviews of Unfaithful that proclaim it to be a
tired rework of the cheating suburban spouse genre. That would be a valid claim
if not for three things: the acting, the direction, and the story.
Diane Lane plays the cheating wife with just the right amount of deceitful sexpot
buried beneath an all-American housewife. She doesn't spiral into destruction
as is typical for this role, but maintains the duality of a sensuous woman and
loving mother. Neither does Richard Gere descend into a jealous rage. Instead
he shows the hurt of a perfectly good guy that assumed he was leading a perfectly
good life.
Director Adrian Lyne has impeccable "cheating spouse movie" credentials
including Indecent Proposal and the classic, Fatal Attraction.
To top it off Lyne also directed 9 1/2 Weeks starring Mickey Rourke and
Kim Basinger. The guy knows R-rated movies. Unfaithful brings something
new to the genre with questions of, whether two wrongs can make a right and
how much can married couple's forgive? What would you do? This is the question
you and your spouse will be asking yourselves.
