Austin
Powers in Goldmember
Dan's Comments
Goldmember is a comedy romp and not so much a movie as a series of loosely
tied together gags. I loved it. Michelle hated it.
Goldmember is the 3rd, probably last and the funniest of Mike Myers'
golden franchise. There was not a cameo performance or product placement left
unturned to insure the return on investment in this film. Made for a respectable
$63 million, Goldmember will make it back in the first week.
At this point in the Austin Powers series Myers is experimenting with
comedy. He pushes the boundaries of poo-poo, ga-ga jokes and sexual inuendo.
He's not sneaking the jokes into the movie he's puts them right in front of
the audience's faces to see what they can handle. The crowd in Central Jersey
laughed audibly throughout the film.
Myers plays on national and ethnic stereotypes without abandon but likely leaves
American audiences in the dust when it comes to jokes about Belgians and the
Dutch. In one scene he plays around with subtitles essentially making fun of
American distaste for foreign language movies. Myers makes the point that much
of our comedy comes at the expense of others.
Of course the entire movie is still a parody of the spy genre but also neatly
parodies other films including: Silence of The Lambs, Annie, Crouching Tiger
Hidden Dragon, Saturday Night Fever, blaxploitation films in general and
rap video.
Goldmember is all about excess so don't be suprised by cameo appearence
from 6 of the biggest stars in Hollywood.
